Canons High School, Shaldon Road , HA8 6AN

Course description

On Wednesday 16th May from 4.30 to 6.30 we have Jon Robinson (who provides specialist health and safety support across the Harrow Academies) coming in to deliver a session on ‘Managing Risk’ (see outline below). This is a session deigned to unpick just what this looks like and will suit any staff involved with managing risk across the school. Risk assessment myths - Do we need to risk assess everything - It’s just a paper exercise - We need to have risk assessment training before completing a risk assessment - Risk assessment is the be all and end all Why manage risk? - Legal (Management regs) - Moral (Keep people safe, duty of care, professional) - Economic / Disruption to education (fines, prosecutions, civil claims, investigation, reputational, long term impact) Role of a leader in managing risk - Setting an example - Monitoring / Oversight - Open door - Feedback (positive and negative, challenge poor behaviour / standards - Integrate health and safety into day to day business, not just a bolt on - Positive culture, we need to mean it and commit long term Managing risk case studies - School journey (Max Palmer) - Science lesson (firework practical technician injury) - Work at height (caretaker) - PE (multi-games activities) - How could managing risk have helped to prevent these incidents? - What systems should have been in place? - What checks / balances need to be in place? - What key learning / what would you do differently as a result?
